Points to note when choosing a DVR machine :

a) Good Resolution is important, never get Playback only in CIF / QCIF format. It will Pixelise when enlarge. Usually High End DVR could Playback or compress 720 x 576 resolution. Always view the PLAYBACK QUALITY & REAL INTERNET VIDEO (not LAN) before deciding which Brand / Model to get. Price is not the only factor, no point paying for the food that you dis-like or could not be eaten even if is Cheaper. Most LOW END DVR comes in Low Resolution, LAG / Slow Video over the Internet.  Example of High Resolution & Smooth Internet Viewing LIVE DEMO 3 . Default ID & PW. READ this Feedback before getting DVR HERE 1 or HERE 2. " Q1: The freaking unit sends 320x200 jpeg images with multiplexer view. That means that the size of a single camera view is 1/4 part of 320x200. That is ridiculous!.....

b) Power Supply - Recommend DC12V 5A Input or PC like Power Supply, widely available.            Never get funny Power like DC16V / DC19V / DC24V that market not available or direct AC Supply link to DVR PCB Board only from Original Manufacturer. They might be cheap initially, but replacing the Power Supply cost near to hundred of dollars or above. 

c) Get a reasonable Size, ensure there's ample place for ventilation in the DVR machine. Harddisk & PCB Board with IC chipset require cooling environment to work 24 x 7. Mini Size (most People choose as Small as possible) or 3.5" x 2 Size DVR will only last 6 months ~ 24 months due to heat built up internally. Healthy Size DVR will last 5 ~ 8 years.

d) Get as much Feedback from other Experience User as possible. They will share their precious experience reducing your lost, suffer, un-happiness from lesson. Always get products from    CASE TRUST or STAR RETAILER .           STAR Retailer assured that what you see is what you get. Even if there are problems later, you can resolve it in a friendly manner with the store. Reputable Store also accept Trade-In of their own products after Consumer used for 14 days ~ 365 days, cause they VALUE their Customer.

e) Ensure DVR parts available for replacement from the place you purchased. (chipset, front panel, Power Supply...) If not, when trouble arise, no one could help you.

Consult the Expert before making your decision! (mainly on your requirement and environment needs, "A" Customer might just need to Monitor his/her Maid/Worker/... what time IN & OUT, 6FPS will be sufficient. "B" Customer might need to have REAL Time monitoring his Cashier/Vehicle/Corridor/....20FPS~25FPS must be require)
